Making a game is not an easy task that anyone can do instantly. In making a game, developer needs many things such as interest and willingness to go through trial and error to achieve desired result. But, for you who already made a game but have not succeed yet and wondering where the fault in what you have been done all this time. Here are some do's and don'ts you can see and follow to achieve the succeed:
Brainstorming to gather the idea is the first step you take not only when you want to make a game but every time you want to make or do something. Brainstorming is an important step to know really deep what you really want, what you should do next, and where you should bring the existing idea and material. In brainstorming, you usually gather all the idea and do research of what possible and what you should do and have for the next step. Unfortunately, some people don't spend enough time to do brainstorming and even skip this step to 'save time', but believe it will cost you more little time in the future if you do brainstorm and do not do it. So, take enough time to brainstorm all your idea.
Remember you are not the first person! There are already many games outsides in the market mean you are not the only one to make that type of game. You need to remember there may be a similar game to your idea and you need to check them. Every single of them if possible. You need to see what interesting in them, what lacks in them, and note every single thing. To make a type of game that already exist means you have to compete with the other similar game. To compete successfully you have to make sure your game stands out more than the other similar game. Be unique and catch the player attention and make them realize your game worth to play more than the other.
In the dictionary, art is said to be the expression and application of human creative skill and imagination in the form of audio, visual, and performing. It means based on the meaning of what you are making is an art because all the required elements are present. Then, because you are making an art, you need to pour all your soul and heart into it or else it is not alive enough or cannot become good art. So, be sure to put all your skill and imagination to make it pleasant to see and enjoyed not only good to be played.
To surpass and make your game more interesting than the other you need to be creative. Be creative to make your game unique and stands out. You need to be creative to put together all the elements you want into one package. You need to be creative to process all the asset and resource you have to accommodate yourself in making the game until it's complete. So, do be creative and achieve the goal you want.
A human cannot live alone, they are social being that the other accompany them. Human also not all-knowing, there must be things that they do not know for themselves. Therefore, do seek help and assistance from the more knowing and experienced than you. do not be ashamed to ask and seek help and suggestion from the other because it helps you to grow more. The help in here not just in skill and knowledge but also moral and emotional support. Remember you are not alone and there are people around you that can support you.
The free asset is sure tempting, but you need to remember that over-use free asset can harm your game. If you use too much free asset you lose your originality and unique feature. By using too much free asset you also make your game seems uninteresting, similar to the other and lack 'wow' factor. It ended in the result that your game does not stand out.
So, it is better if you work with some artist to produce your own original asset and achieve something authentic that exist only in your game. That way, your game sure stands out more than the other game that only utilizes free asset.
Dream big is important but you also need to be realistic. You still have other things that need your attention. You still have a life outside your work life, you have limited sources and budget and human resources. So, make the plan that really suits you. taking risk is important but you also need to consider the after effect and consequence of that risk you take. What is the worst that can happen and can you accept and face that worst scenario? Be sure to consider everything and not be regretful if you already take one decision just because you lack consideration.
UI or User Interface is the way system interact with the user, in-game mean player. Many games failed to get many players because the developer didn't pay enough attention to UI.
It caused the player to feel unattached to the game because there is no interaction or confused because the direction and story are too complicated and hard to understand.
So, make sure you put enough attention to your UI that your player can feel attach and engage even immersed in the game they played.
Being published is not the end of the story. Some game developer neglects the previous game they publish and only focus to make new game thinking that because it already published means my task is finish.
Remember that player is equal to fans, means if a player like one game produced by one developer or company, the possibility of the player waits and try other game produced by that company or developer.
So, if you neglect the game you already publish and there are in fact some error and bug and the player lose interest in your game, means when you publish another game you will lose a player because they think the game produced by you is lack of quality.
Community helps you gain information and keep up with the current trend. Do not be afraid to join the community exist in your place even though you are a beginner.
Who knows in there you will meet someone that can teach you, guide you, or interest in your idea and offer to work together. Also, by joining the community you can also get many support and advice if you ever found difficulty in the process of your work.
