Behind every successful game, there is always a team of talented designers, working endlessly to deliver a flawless game design to the players.

Earlier this week, we got the chance to catch up with one of the members of Melon Gaming's design team, Stormy, and ask him a few questions regarding game design. Through him, we got to learn a lot about the process that happens behind the scene at Melon Gaming, and how the design team have worked together to produce one great game after the other.

Check out our interview below to see all the insights we've got!

Q : First of all, how many people are there in the Melon Gaming team?

A : Currently, there are 4 game developers and 4 artists in the team.

Q: What game are you working on at the moment?

A: We are currently in the process of making "Glory or Destruction", Melon Gaming's biggest project to date.

"Glory or Destruction" is an upcoming tower-defense game from Melon Gaming. The gameplay revolves around a feud between two opposing factions; "Justice Faction" and "Crime Faction" that are both made up by military warriors. These two factions have to fight against groups of gangsters in order to take over each other's domain.

Q: Can you tell us briefly the process of designing a game?

A: Before anything else, the designing process starts with determining the concept of the game.

The team will first do a brainstorming process, where every member will come up with an idea of a game concept (either brand new or adapted from other pre-existing games). Those ideas will then be combined, modified and revised so a brand-new and unique concept for a game will be born.

Once we've settled on a concept, the next step is to determine the mechanism of the gameplay in detail. Once that's done, we will begin dividing the labors between the team members. Each member of the team will begin designing the character assets, User Interface, etc. which then will be given to the programmers to be inserted into the game.

The game will continuously be perfected and tested, and once it's ready, it will finally be released to the public.

Q : How long does it take to design a game?

A: It depends on the complexity of the game. The more complex the game gets, the longer it will take to design.

Q : What are the challenges in designing a game?

First, because each artist has a different taste and style when it comes to designing and illustrating, we do find some challenges in adjusting our different styles to match the style of the game. We also have to make the perfect assets (UI, UX ,character animation, etc.) that are suitable to the overall mood and style of the games, and that can be quite challenging.

Q: How do you work together with the other team members?

A : We have to maintain communication between the artist team and the programmers or developers. Each message has to be clear and consistent so there won't be any miscommunications that may cause disruptions later on.

Next, we have to come to an understanding when we have a differing opinion on certain things. In addition, we have to make sure that no one gets offended when their ideas are rejected.

Most of all, the most important element is to maintain teamwork. Each member has to make a contribution so the team can reach our collective goals.
