How to Keep the Players Engaged in your HTML5 Games

One of the goals in making a game is to get the players to keep playing it. Maintaining player engagement is certainly important, as you don’t want your players to quit playing halfway through your game, or uninstall it right after they finish your game the first time around. You want the players to keep coming back to your game and replay it, or play it multiple times over.

Here we have provided a few very simple tips on how to keep your players engaged in your game. Check them out down below!

Keep it Simple and Clear

Keep your controls and rules simple. Your game should take a few moments to learn and a lifetime to master. Make sure the players won’t have to take a long time to learn your game’s gameplay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gameplay ) or your game will immediately lose its appeal. Don’t keep your players in the dark.  Give them clear information or tutorials about the controls and what they should do. You can also give them information on their progress and what they’ve done so far, so it will motivate them to keep pushing through the game.

Provide Players with Choices

Give your players a little freedom to make different choices. You can provide a variety of choices that will end up in different outcomes to keep things interesting. Allow them to complete quest in different ways, or use different weapons or tools. This will keep your game from being boring and monotonous, plus, the players’ curiosity will be piqued as they find out the different outcomes of the choices.

Make it Challenging

To keep the players engaged, ultimately, you have to achieve replayability (https://en.oxforddictionaries.com/definition/replayability) . Input elements that will encourage players to replay levels, or play your game multiple times. One way to do that is by implementing a challenge. You can increase the game’s difficulties as it goes on, and add new challenges for the players to tackle. Make your games challenging enough so the player may not succeed or be satisfied in just one try.  Give rewards to the players to help them with the gradually increasing difficulty. Make sure to make them work for the reward.
